Open Question: Ear gauging nightmare?!?

I went to a local tattoo shop where I had my first tattoo done to seek advice on ear stretching a month and a half ago. I was given the horrible advice of skipping a gauge every time I stretch. So I did this the first time; I went from 16 to 12. I was also told to push the taper through and insert jewelry. Which I did, and resulted in a decent bit of pain and light bleeding. This cleared up very nicely and I waited 6 week after it was fully healed to begin gauging again. I bought a 12 to 8 gauge taper. I tried to slide it in only as far as my ears could take without pain, but the o rings wouldn't keep them in place. So I shoved them further. This tore the holes. It still wasn't far enough for the o rings to keep them on, so they slid back through out the day, and I continued pushing them in. Until I accidentally pushed them all the way through. This tore them a lot, resulted in a lot of bleeding and even the beginnings of infection. I didn't blow them out (LUCKILY!!). But the same girl at the same shop informed me to clean them with alcohol and hydrogen peroxide twice daily. I was doing that, and they were not healing at all. So I did MUCH more research and consulted other professionals. I'm not cleaning with soap and soaking in sea salt. It will be some time before I stretch again. I only want them to be 6s or 4s at the most. I know now not to skip sizes and all that jazz. But I was wondering if anyone had any helpful advice on how to make the stretching process easier? I think I have very tender ears that are prone to tearing and bleed, and would really like to reduce this! Thanks! *I am NOW cleaning with soap.
